Prop firms, funded accounts, and how this site works.
A proprietary trading (prop) firm lets you trade with the firm's capital instead of your own money. The most common model works in three steps: you pay a one-time or monthly fee to enter an evaluation challenge on a demo account, you pass by hitting a profit target without breaking the firm's drawdown or consistency rules, and you then receive a funded account where you trade the firm's capital and keep a share of the profits.
Firms run this model because challenge fees fund the program and evaluations help them find consistently profitable traders. Some firms also offer instant-funding accounts that skip the evaluation in exchange for a higher fee. Because you are trading their money, the firm carries the market risk — but you still lose your challenge fee if you fail, so read the rules carefully before buying.
The profit split is the percentage of trading profits you keep on a funded account. If your account makes $1,000 on an 80/20 split, you receive $800 and the firm keeps $200. Many firms start traders around an 80/20 split and scale it higher — sometimes to 90/10 or beyond — as you deliver consistent results and pass payout milestones.
Two things matter more than the headline number: the payout policy (how often you can withdraw, whether the first payout has extra conditions, and any consistency requirements) and how long you must trade before your first withdrawal. A 90% split you can never reach because of strict rules is worth less than an 80% split with fair, reliable payouts. Always check each firm's current payout terms on its official site.
Drawdown rules define how far your account can fall before you fail. A static (hard) drawdown is a fixed floor — for example, 5% below your starting balance. That floor never moves, so every dollar you earn widens your safety buffer. A trailing drawdown instead follows your peak balance or equity upward, which means the floor rises as you profit and your buffer stays the same size.
Example on a $100,000 account with a 5% rule: both systems start you with a $95,000 floor. If you grow the account to $105,000, the static floor is still $95,000 — a $10,000 buffer. Under equity-based trailing, the floor moves up to $100,000 (5% below your peak), leaving only a $5,000 buffer. Trailing is stricter, especially early in the account, so always check which type a firm uses before buying a challenge.
Most evaluation-based prop firms are not regulated financial institutions. Because challenges typically run on demo accounts and you pay a fee rather than depositing trading funds, the firm is generally not acting as a broker for you — which means the investor protections that come with a regulated broker usually do not apply to your challenge fee.
Some programs are structured differently — for example, allocation models connected to a licensed broker, or firms owned by regulated entities — and those carry different protections. Before paying any firm, check its official terms, refund policy, and payout track record, and verify the regulatory status of any connected broker on the regulator's public register.
We may earn affiliate commissions when you click certain links to brokers or prop firms and go on to sign up or purchase a challenge. This costs you nothing extra — the commission comes from the firm's side. We may also display advertising on the site.
Rankings and reviews are based on the data we collect, not on who pays. We do not sell placements in our lists, and an affiliate relationship never guarantees a firm a position or a positive review.
Each profile is compiled from the firm's own official documentation and publicly available sources — covering pricing, evaluation steps, profit targets, drawdown structure, platforms, and payout information. Where sources disagree, we prefer the firm's official pages.
Because prop firm pricing and rules change often, entries are re-checked periodically, and firms that appear to have shut down or stopped paying out are reviewed or removed. If you spot outdated data on any profile, contact us and it will be corrected.
Yes — trading forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk. Retail traders frequently lose money; regulators in many jurisdictions actually require brokers to publicly disclose that a large majority of retail CFD accounts lose money. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and a series of leveraged losses can wipe out an account quickly.
Only trade with money you could lose entirely, use position sizing and stop-losses rather than impulse decisions, and treat any strategy — including strategies discussed on educational sites like this one — as something to test and verify yourself, not follow blindly. Past performance never guarantees future results.
